The same road connects us. Coney Island Avenue runs from the Avenue J stores down past Kings Highway and keeps going until it reaches our block between Avenue Y and Avenue Z, which means a customer up there is ten minutes away without turning off anything. Some people drop the car before work and walk to the Q at Avenue J; others wait it out, since a chip repair is done in about half an hour.
What comes in from these blocks is mostly family transport. Minivans with a booster seat in the middle row, sedans that do the school run and the Kings Highway shop, the occasional car that has not left East 16th Street in a fortnight. Low annual mileage does not spare the glass from what the weather does to it. A cracked windshield on something like that is $250 to $500 fitted and back with you before closing. If the lenses have hazed to the point where the low beams die twenty feet ahead, we take those back to clear while the glass cures.
Ocean Parkway is the defining road. Short trips and long parking do the damage here. A car that mostly runs to Avenue J and back spends the rest of the week outdoors, so weather gets more time on it than the road does. Winter is the worst of it: a chip picked up on Kings Highway sits through a hard freeze, and the owner comes out to find it has run six inches sideways overnight. The Ocean Parkway service roads contribute their share of scraped mirrors and broken side glass, since angled spaces put the flanks of parked cars in the path of moving ones. Storm branches account for a fair number of the rear windows we replace on these streets. Lenses fade slowly under the trees but they still fade, and a fifteen-year-old car usually needs both lamps done.
Nothing complicated about the trip. Head south on Coney Island Avenue from wherever you are and stay with it through Kings Highway and Avenue U; we are on the stretch between Avenue Y and Avenue Z, ten to twelve minutes for two and a half miles. No highway is involved in any of that. Ocean Parkway southbound then a left at Avenue Z is the alternative when the Avenue is jammed. We open at eight and shut at five, Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays.
