A long commute at either end of a winter day is done in the dark, and dark driving is where a scratched windshield and a clouded pair of headlights compound each other: the lenses put out less light, the glass scatters what is coming the other way, and the driver squints the whole way home. Restoring the lenses takes an afternoon and costs between $60 and $150. Doing it alongside the glass means one trip down Conduit Boulevard instead of two, and there is a lifetime workmanship warranty on the glass side of it.
Trucks set the rhythm around here. The blocks near the rail lines are industrial, Van Sinderen Avenue and the streets feeding it carry commercial traffic all day, and Atlantic Avenue and Fulton Street move at whatever speed the lights allow. Conduit Boulevard is the useful road for us, since it funnels straight onto the Belt Parkway. Overhead, the 3 runs above Livonia Avenue and the J and Z clatter along Jamaica Avenue, which means the streets underneath sit in shadow, collect grit off the structure, and see a lot of stop-start driving. Parking varies block to block: some houses have driveways, some streets are packed by six in the evening, and near the industrial stretches a mobile van has to work around parked trailers. Highland Park sits at the northern boundary, a long way from the truck routes at the southern end.

Truck routes are hard on windshields. Following a loaded flatbed along Pennsylvania Avenue or sitting behind a dumpster truck on Linden Boulevard puts a car directly under whatever falls off the load, and gravel at thirty miles an hour is enough to leave a chip. Grit shakes down from the elevated structure over Livonia Avenue too, and it settles on paint, on glass and on lens plastic. Industrial blocks bring the other kind of damage: cars left overnight near the rail yards get door glass broken far more often than cars parked on a residential street, and a shattered side window sometimes takes the regulator with it. We replace both, vacuum every shard out of the door cavity and the seats, and recycle the old glass.
Conduit Boulevard does most of the work. Follow it to the Belt Parkway, head west for roughly nine miles, and leave at the Coney Island Avenue exit; the shop is a short hop north, between Avenue Y and Avenue Z. Reckon on twenty to twenty-five minutes outside rush hour and rather more inside it, so a morning slot beats an afternoon one. It depends entirely on the block. Where trailers and delivery trucks own the curb, there may be nowhere legal to set up, so we ask about the street before committing to a time.
