Wind is the thing people forget about Bay Ridge. Off the Narrows it comes up the cross streets with nothing to slow it, and a car left facing Shore Road takes it full on the windshield. That matters twice: grit gets driven into the glass, and a chip that would have sat still for months in a garage opens into a crack overnight when the temperature drops. Salt in the air is doing quiet work on the trim and the lamp housings at the same time.
Then there is the hill. Streets tip down toward the water, so half the parking in the neighborhood is on a grade, and a door that gets away from someone on the uphill side lands hard on the car alongside. Add the Verrazzano approach feeding traffic through, the Gowanus Expressway shedding road debris from above, and 86th Street doing its usual stop-start, and it is no mystery why we see the 11209 plates we do. Most of that work goes back out the same afternoon.
Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue keep the neighborhood fed and keep it slow, with delivery vans stopping wherever they must and buses pulling in and out. Fourth Avenue moves better above the R line, though the light timing punishes anyone in a hurry. Everything over it belongs to the Gowanus Expressway, which is where a fair amount of the loose stone that reaches our bay begins its journey. Down at Shore Road the pace drops and the view opens, and cars park nose-in on a slope that never lets a door swing gently. Around Fort Hamilton and Owl's Head Park the blocks get quieter and driveways start appearing, which makes mobile work straightforward on that side. Whatever the address, the Belt Parkway is close, and that shoreline stretch acts as a sandblaster in the months when the crews are salting.

Salt air is the local specialty.
