Coney Island Avenue runs right through Midwood and straight down to our door, which makes this the shortest drive of any neighborhood we serve outside our own. It is also a street where weak headlights announce themselves. Between Avenue J and Avenue M the traffic is dense, cars nose out of driveways between parked vehicles, and shoppers cross wherever the gap opens. A yellowed lens never fails all at once. It fades over five or six years until the driver has quietly adjusted to seeing less than before.
The Ocean Parkway service roads add their own reason to care. Cyclists use the path after dark, people sit on the benches along the malls, and crossings arrive fast if your beam is short and scattered. Aim is half of that: pointed high, you throw glare across a wide road at oncoming traffic, pointed low, the crosswalk gets there before the light does.
