Family vehicles dominate this work here, and family vehicles have a lot of glass. A full-size van has door panes, sliding windows, fixed quarter lights and a pair of rear doors, and any of them can be taken out by a shopping cart on a commercial block or a knock while manoeuvring on a narrow street. The pane is rarely the difficult part. Finding every fragment in a vehicle with three rows, floor tracks and a load of storage pockets is.
That is where the time goes, and it is included in the $200 to $450 that covers most panes. We remove the trim, vacuum the door shell and the seat rails, clear the runs, then fit the new glass on new clips. Sliding side windows on minivans get their catches and seals checked, since a pane that no longer latches is a security problem rather than a comfort one. Rear screens with heating grids are reconnected and tested. If the break jammed a regulator, it gets sorted before the door goes back together. Double parking on 13th Avenue is the local hazard for door glass, and the pattern is consistent: a passing vehicle catches the rear door of something parked tight against the line of traffic.
